That's useful in short bursts and wearing when it never shuts off. Ashwagandha is studied as an adaptogen, an herb that helps the body handle that load. A systematic review of 9 clinical studies in people under stress found ashwagandha lowered cortisol over 30 to 112 days, with no significant side effects reported.† The candid part: a 2025 meta-analysis pooled 7 trials and found cortisol dropped by about 1.16 µg/dL on average, but across 6 trials that asked people how stressed they felt, the change wasn't statistically significant. The cortisol result holds up in both reviews; the "I feel calmer" result is less clear.

The training side: in an 8-week randomized trial in 57 healthy men aged 18 to 50 with little lifting experience, everyone followed the same resistance program while taking 300 mg of KSM-66 twice a day or a placebo. Bench-press max went up 46 kg in the ashwagandha group versus 26 kg with placebo.† Testosterone rose by 96 ng/dL versus 18 ng/dL with placebo, though end-of-study levels weren't statistically different between the groups. More broadly, a 2026 meta-analysis of 13 trials and 599 people found ashwagandha improved exercise performance on average, most consistently for aerobic endurance; strength effects were positive but less certain.†

The fine print: one serving of Maximum Male has 300 mg of KSM-66. The strength trial used 600 mg a day, and that 2026 meta-analysis found 500 to 600 mg a day was the best-supported range. Read these studies as the case for the ingredient, not a promise for a single serving.

Tribulus terrestris fruit: 600 mg

Tribulus is a low, sprawling plant with spiny, burr-like fruit, and that fruit has been used as a tonic in traditional medicine since ancient times. Angel, Oregon. It's a farm town of about 3,500 people in the Willamette Valley, and our UL-certified cGMP facility is where the formulators, the makers and the testers all work under one roof. The owners work in the building too, and the company has been owner-run since 2017. We've been making supplements in Oregon since 1974, and we're not getting old either.

Frequently asked questions

How much DHEA is in each capsule?

Each vegetarian capsule contains 25 mg of DHEA, and the label's serving is one capsule a day, so a 60-capsule bottle lasts 60 days.

When should I take DHEA, and does it need food?

The label doesn't say, so choose a time you'll stick with. The 1994 trial had people take it at night, but that was study design, not a rule. If your practitioner has a preference, follow it.

How long before I notice anything?

There's no guaranteed timeline, and some people notice nothing. In studies using 50 mg a day, blood DHEA-S rose within about 2 weeks, and well-being was measured after 3 months. If you're unsure whether it's doing anything for you, check in with your practitioner.

Is DHEA for men or women?

Both. Men and women make DHEA, and both took part in the studies above. In the 1994 trial, androgen levels doubled in women taking 50 mg while men saw only a small change. The label lists "hair growth on the face (in women)" among possible side effects. It's for adults 18 and older only, and not for use during pregnancy or nursing.

Can I take it with one of your multivitamins?

Check with your practitioner first, since the label asks you to talk with a physician or licensed qualified health care professional before combining DHEA with any other dietary supplement or drug. Our multivitamins don't contain DHEA, so you wouldn't be doubling up, and a multi covers everyday vitamins and minerals that DHEA doesn't.

Is DHEA safe to take with my medication?

Ask your practitioner before you start. The label asks you to consult a physician or licensed qualified health care professional if you use any prescription or over-the-counter drug. Bring the bottle so they can see exactly what's in it.

Keep learning

Companions to discuss with your practitioner:

Men's Multi, a daily multivitamin for men

Women's Multi, a daily multivitamin for women

Men's 50+ Multivitamin, built for men over 50

Women's 50+ Multivitamin, built for women over 50

B-Complex, a vitamin B complex in one daily capsule

References

Orentreich N et al.
