After a salty meal, your body hangs on to extra water to keep sodium in balance, which can leave you feeling puffy. The 350 mg on our label is the strontium itself, not the weight of the whole citrate compound.

How does citrate compare? In a small 8-week study in rats given strontium citrate or strontium ranelate (19 female rats in all), both strontium groups ended up with far more strontium in their bones than the control group. The citrate group's levels were higher, but its doses also carried more strontium, and once the researchers adjusted for dose, the difference between the two forms was not significant. The same authors point out that the effects of strontium citrate on bone are still largely unknown. That's a rat study, not a human one, and we'd rather tell you that than round it up.

What the research does and doesn't show

The lab and small-animal evidence on bone cells is strong. In people, the large trials of the prescription form suggest that bone-building effect may not carry over, and the 2020 review's authors propose that strontium may work mainly by being built into the bone mineral itself (Marx 2020). Those trials also used a different compound than this one, so their results can't simply be transferred to a strontium citrate supplement.

One more wrinkle worth knowing. Strontium atoms are heavier than calcium atoms, so bone that contains strontium looks denser on a DXA bone scan than it is. A lab study of how strontium changes DXA readings, using mixtures of calcium and strontium bone mineral, found the scan reads about 10% high for every 1% of the mineral's calcium swapped for strontium, and the correction was the same on every scanner model tested. So scan numbers taken while you use strontium need that context.

Why the 2-hour gap from calcium

Strontium and calcium compete for absorption. Our label puts it plainly: take it 2 hours before or after calcium products, "as it will interfere with absorption of calcium." Research in healthy adults shows the other side of the same tug-of-war. A pooled analysis of strontium absorption in healthy adults estimated that people absorb about 22% of the strontium they swallow on average (typically somewhere between 11% and 46%), and that absorption drops when calcium intake is very high and rises when it is very low. Big calcium-rich meals are worth spacing out too, since very high calcium intake cuts into strontium absorption. For hyaluronic acid, a 12-week trial in 150 healthy adults found that 120 mg a day of oral sodium hyaluronate improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo, with smaller effects at 60 mg a day. Six of its seven authors work for a company that makes hyaluronic acid (Dolečková 2025).

What it doesn't show: the label lists the blend as one 750 mg total without breaking out each ingredient, and the collagen trials used hydrolyzed collagen. The honest limits: these were short absorption studies with small groups, not long-term bone studies.

The trade-off is size.
