Super Enzymes+ – Fat, Protein and Carb Digestion Support | 100 or 200 Capsules
Super Enzymes+ is a fat digesting enzyme formula in capsules, sold in 100- and 200-capsule bottles. Each capsule pairs a 240 mg delayed-release pancreatic enzyme complex (17,400 USP amylase, 3,200 USP lipase and 15,400 USP protease units) with 150 mg betaine HCl, 75 mg ox bile, 50 mg acid stable protease and 13 mg papain to support the digestion of fats, proteins and starches at mealtime.†
If a rich dinner or a big restaurant meal tends to sit with you longer than it used to, this formula was built for that plate. Your body already makes its own enzymes, bile and stomach acid. Super Enzymes+ brings more of each kind to the table, so the work of breaking food down has some backup.† It's for adults who eat real meals and would rather support digestion than give up the steak.
We've been making supplements in Oregon since 1974, and we'd rather explain a formula than hype it. So here's every ingredient, and what the research does and doesn't show.
Why people take Super Enzymes+
- Fat digestion. 3,200 USP lipase units plus 75 mg of ox bile per capsule support the breakdown of dietary fats.†
- Protein digestion from three directions. Pancreatic protease (15,400 USP units), acid stable protease and papain support protein breakdown.†
- Starch digestion. 17,400 USP amylase units from the pancreatic enzyme complex support the breakdown of starches.†
- Stomach-stage support. 150 mg of betaine HCl, a source of hydrochloric acid, supports the acidic stomach environment where protein digestion begins.†
- Release timed to where the enzymes work. The pancreatic enzyme complex is delayed release, made to pass the stomach and work where your own pancreatic enzymes do.†

*Daily Value not established. Serving size is 1 capsule. The panel doesn't print a servings-per-container number, so count capsules: one capsule is one serving. Other ingredients, as printed: "Deep mined calcium phosphate, gelatin (100% natural, preservative-free, from capsule shell), magnesium trisilicate, magnesium stearate, silica, and stabilized rice bran." The label states: "NO soy, salt, yeast, gluten, egg products, sugar, starch, or preservatives." It is not vegetarian.
How Super Enzymes+ works
Digestion is a relay. Stomach acid and pepsin, the stomach's own enzyme, start on protein. Then the pancreas sends proteases, lipases and amylases into the small intestine to break complex nutrients into pieces small enough to absorb (Whitcomb and Lowe review of human pancreatic enzymes), and bile arrives to help with fat. Super Enzymes+ puts something in each leg of that relay.†
Pancreatic Enzyme Complex (240 mg, delayed release)
Pancreatin and pancrelipase are enzyme preparations made from animal pancreas, so they carry the same three enzyme families your own pancreas makes: amylase for starch, lipase for fat and protease for protein. Diastase is another amylase-type enzyme for starch. The label lists activity, not just weight: 17,400 USP amylase units, 3,200 USP lipase units and 15,400 USP protease units per capsule. USP units measure what an enzyme can do, which tells you more than its weight.
Why delayed release? Pancreatic enzymes are made for the near-neutral small intestine and lose activity in strong stomach acid. The complex is delayed release so it's designed to get past the stomach before it goes to work.† Most clinical research on pancreatic enzymes wasn't done in healthy adults, so we don't cite it here.
Lipase and ox bile: the fat team
Fat and water don't mix, so fat needs extra help before enzymes can get at it. Bile salts act like a detergent: they settle onto fat droplets, take part in fat breakdown, and help dissolve and carry fat-soluble nutrients toward absorption (a review of how bile salts work in digestion). Super Enzymes+ pairs 75 mg of ox bile (bile from cattle) with the lipase in the pancreatic complex.†
What the research shows: in a small double-blind crossover trial, 16 healthy adults took a 280 mg acid-resistant lipase capsule or a placebo right before a high-fat liquid meal. With lipase they reported less stomach fullness over the next hour, with no difference in bloating or nausea (Levine et al., lipase before a high-fat meal). Honest limits: one meal, a small group, and a different lipase from the pancreatic lipase here, measured in units that don't compare directly.
Three proteases for protein
Protein gets help at three points. The pancreatic protease (15,400 USP units) works in the small intestine. The acid stable protease (50 mg at 500 SAPU/g) is rated in SAPU, a unit of protease activity measured in acid, which tells you it's meant to work in the stomach. Papain (13 mg, 75,000 USP papain units) is the protein-splitting enzyme from papaya. Neither is marked delayed release on the label, so both can start on protein early.†
What the research shows: in a randomized, double-blind crossover trial in 24 healthy young adults, a microbial protease blend taken with 25 g of whey protein made the first-hour rise in blood essential amino acids about 14% larger, and branched-chain amino acids about 15% larger, than placebo. Total amino acids and leucine didn't differ (Huang et al., protease with whey protein). It was a different protease and a single shake, so it suggests added protease can speed early protein breakdown, not that this exact formula does.†
Betaine HCl (150 mg)
Betaine hydrochloride is betaine (a compound found in beets, spinach and whole grains) bound to hydrochloric acid, the same acid your stomach makes. Stomach acid switches on pepsin and starts unfolding proteins so enzymes can get at them. At 150 mg per capsule, this is a modest amount meant to work with the meal in the stomach.† We haven't found good trials of betaine HCl at this amount in healthy adults, so we aren't citing any.
Fenugreek seed (100 mg) and the 32 mg blend
Fenugreek is a seed spice used in curries and teas, with a long history in traditional digestive formulas. Human research on fenugreek mostly looks at outcomes other than digestion, so we include it as a traditional botanical and make no claim for it here.
The 32 mg proprietary blend adds choline bitartrate and inositol plus four herbs with a long mealtime tradition: hops strobiles, peppermint leaf, chamomile flower and yarrow flower. Each is a small amount: supporting cast, not the reason to buy the bottle.
How to take Super Enzymes+
Label directions, word for word: "One to three capsules with water or juice, with each meal, as a dietary supplement."
Take it with food, not on an empty stomach: it's made for meals, and each capsule contains betaine HCl.
Ask your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition. That includes acid-reducing medication, since this formula adds an acid source.
Don't take our word for it
- Verified by independent labs. ISO 17025-accredited labs check our test results.
- Every ingredient lot tested before use. Federal rules only require an identity test on incoming dietary ingredients. We test every incoming lot for identity, potency, heavy metals and microbes.
- If it misses spec, it doesn't go in a bottle. More than 99% of our tests pass, and the lots that don't are turned away.
- A certificate of analysis for every lot. Every lot of Super Enzymes+ has its own certificate of analysis.
Made in the USA. Made and tested in Mt. Angel, Oregon. Super Enzymes+ is made in our UL-certified cGMP facility in a farm town of about 3,500 in the Willamette Valley, where the formulators, makers and testers work under one roof and the owners work in the building too. We've been making supplements for 52 years, and we're not getting old either.
Frequently asked questions
How many Super Enzymes+ capsules should I take?
The label says one to three capsules with water or juice, with each meal. A simple start is one capsule at your largest meal, then adjust within that range.
Should I take it before, during or after a meal?
With the meal, as the label directs. Enzymes work on the food they meet, so food needs to be there.
Is Super Enzymes+ vegetarian?
No. Ox bile, pancreatin and pancrelipase come from animals, and the capsule shell is gelatin.
How is this different from your Betaine HCl?
Super Enzymes+ is a full enzyme formula with 150 mg of betaine HCl per capsule. Our Betaine HCl with acid stable protease sticks to the stomach stage: 649 mg of betaine HCl and 130 mg of acid stable protease per capsule. Because both contain betaine HCl, ask your practitioner before taking them together.
Can I take it with a probiotic?
Yes, they do different jobs. Enzymes break down the food in front of them, while a probiotic like our 3-in-1 Probiotic Fusion supplies live bacteria (here's how gut microbes fit into digestion). Follow each label's directions.
How soon will I notice a difference?
If you notice one, it will be around the meal you take it with, not weeks later, since enzymes act on that meal's food. Results vary.†
Is it safe to take with my medication?
Ask your healthcare practitioner first, and bring the bottle so they can see the full label.
