MSM 2000 is a single-ingredient supplement: each vegetarian tablet holds 2,000 mg of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), a sulfur compound found in small amounts in everyday foods, with no additives, per the label. One tablet is one serving, so the 60-tablet bottle is a 60-day supply. MSM supplies sulfur, a building block for healthy joints and bones.†

Joints are one of those things you don't think about until they start leaving you notes. If you run, hike, lift, garden or chase kids around, and you plan to keep doing all of it in your 70s and 80s, your 30s and 40s are a good time to start paying attention. Aging isn't optional. Getting old is.

MSM 2000 keeps it simple: one ingredient, 2,000 mg, one tablet a day. It's an easy place to start a joint routine, or an easy add-on to the one you already have.

Why people take MSM 2000

  • Provides 2,000 mg of MSM, a dietary source of sulfur, a building block for healthy joints and bones.†
  • May support joint and muscle comfort after hard workouts (early, small studies so far).†
  • Supports the body's own antioxidant defenses during strenuous exercise.†

What's in each serving

Ingredient Amount per serving % Daily Value
100% Pure MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) 2,000 mg *

*Daily Value Not Established. Serving size: 1 Vegetarian Tablet. The panel doesn't print a servings-per-container number; at one tablet per serving, the 60-tablet bottle holds 60 servings. No other ingredients are listed. The label reads "100% Pure MSM - No Additives" and "HPLC TESTED," and states: "NO corn, soy, salt, yeast, gluten, milk & egg products, sugar, starch, or preservatives."

How MSM 2000 works

What MSM is

MSM, short for methylsulfonylmethane (also called dimethyl sulfone), is a small sulfur-containing compound. It turns up in fruits, vegetables, grains, coffee, tea and cow's milk, but only in trace amounts, measured in hundredths of a part per million. That's why it comes in supplement form: MSM for supplements is typically made by oxidizing DMSO, its parent compound, and then purifying it, and a 2017 review of MSM's uses and safety notes that manufactured MSM has no detectable structural or safety differences from the MSM found in nature.

Why sulfur matters

Sulfur is part of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, which your body uses to build proteins, and the label calls MSM a "building block for healthy bones & joints."† The idea behind MSM is that it can act as a dietary sulfur donor. Here's the candid part: an animal study found sulfur from MSM in blood proteins, but how much of it the human body uses this way hasn't been pinned down. What is clear, per the same review, is that people absorb MSM quickly (in under an hour), and in healthy men taking 3 grams a day, blood MSM levels in most of them kept rising from week 2 to week 4. Translation: it builds up with daily use, so a steady daily habit is the point.

What the joint research shows

The joint research in healthy, active people is still small. In one trial, 22 healthy adults training for a half-marathon took 3 grams of MSM or a placebo for three weeks before the race. Runners on MSM reported less muscle and joint discomfort afterward, by a margin the researchers considered meaningful, but the difference wasn't statistically significant, and markers of oxidative stress and muscle damage didn't differ between groups (Withee 2017, half-marathon trial). The 2017 review adds that the best dose and timing for MSM are still being worked out, so read this as an early signal, not the final word.

Exercise recovery and antioxidant support

Hard exercise temporarily raises oxidative stress, a normal part of training. In one 10-day trial, 18 untrained young men took MSM (50 mg per kilogram of body weight, about 3.5 grams for a 154-pound man) or a placebo, then ran 14 km. The MSM group finished with lower oxidative stress markers and higher glutathione levels (Nakhostin-Roohi 2011, 14 km run study). In an eight-man pilot study with no placebo group, 3 grams a day for about four weeks raised blood antioxidant capacity after a tough leg workout (18 sets of knee extensions), with a trend toward less soreness than 1.5 grams a day, and no change in workout performance (Kalman 2012 pilot study).†

The honest limits: these studies are small and short, most of them used more MSM than one tablet provides, and none of them measured bone. We'd rather tell you what they don't show than oversell them.

Why one 2,000 mg tablet

MSM 2000 puts the whole serving in a single tablet. The label lists MSM and nothing else, so it's easy to pair with other joint products without guessing what's doubled up. And because MSM builds up with steady use, one tablet a day is a routine you can actually keep.

How to take MSM 2000

Directions (from the label): One tablet daily, as a dietary supplement.

  • The label doesn't say what time of day or whether to take it with food. Pick a time you'll remember, since MSM builds up with steady daily use.
  • It's a big tablet (it holds 2,000 mg of MSM), so take it with a full glass of water.
  • Several of the studies above used 3 grams a day. Stick with the label's one tablet unless your healthcare practitioner tells you otherwise.

Ask your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition.

Don't take our word for it

  • Verified by independent labs. ISO 17025-accredited labs check our test results.
  • Every ingredient lot tested before use. Federal rules only require an identity test on incoming dietary ingredients. We test every incoming lot, including the MSM that goes into this tablet, for identity, potency, heavy metals and microbes.
  • If it misses spec, it doesn't go in a bottle. More than 99% of our tests pass, and the lots that don't are turned away.
  • A certificate of analysis for every lot. Every lot of MSM 2000 gets its own.

Made in the USA. Made and tested in Mt. Angel, Oregon. That's a farm town of about 3,500 people in the Willamette Valley, and our UL-certified cGMP facility sits right in it. The people who formulate, make and test MSM 2000 work under one roof, and the owners work in the building too (owner-run since 2017). We've been making supplements in Oregon since 1974. That's 52 years, and we're not getting old either.

Frequently asked questions

How much MSM is in MSM 2000?

Each vegetarian tablet contains 2,000 mg of MSM, and one tablet is the full serving. At one tablet a day, the 60-tablet bottle is a 60-day supply.

Should I take MSM with food?

The label doesn't say, so it's your call. Taking it with a meal and a full glass of water is an easy way to turn it into a daily habit.

How long does MSM take to work?

Give it about a month of daily use before you judge it. The studies above ran from 10 days to about a month, and blood MSM levels keep building over the first weeks of daily use. Results vary, and some people won't notice much.

Can I take MSM 2000 with Joint Solution Advanced or Inflameze?

Yes, and they're sold together as the Joint + Mobility Stack with MSM 2000, Inflameze and Joint Solution Advanced. Joint Solution Advanced lists 700 mg of MSM per 4-capsule serving, so one MSM 2000 tablet plus a full 4-capsule serving comes to 2,700 mg of MSM, below the 4 grams a day the 2017 review describes as well tolerated. Inflameze contains no MSM. Joint Solution Advanced includes glucosamine from crab shell, so check that label if you avoid shellfish.

Is MSM the same as DMSO?

No. They're different compounds. DMSO is MSM's parent compound, and the MSM used in supplements (also called dimethyl sulfone) is typically made by oxidizing DMSO and purifying the result. MSM is odorless, and it's the only ingredient in this tablet.

Is it safe to take MSM every day?

For most healthy adults, yes: the 2017 review describes MSM as well tolerated at up to 4 grams a day, with few, mild side effects. One MSM 2000 tablet is 2 grams. If you take medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a medical condition, ask your healthcare practitioner first.
